What's open, what's closed on Martin Luther King Day on Long Island

Monday, Jan. 19, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday commemorating the life of the slain civil rights leader. 

Here is a guide to what's open, and what's closed on Monday.

Closed

Banks and financial markets are closed. ATM machines should work.

Federal, state and local government offices will be closed; emergency services across the region will be on call around the clock.

Public schools across the state are closed. Some private schools will hold classes, however.

Most public libraries will be closed, but some may be open or have holiday hours, so check your library.

The post office will be closed and won't deliver mail and packages. It will deliver Priority Mail Express on Monday and on the other federal holidays

Generally, FedEx operates normally on King Day, but UPS does not, with some exceptions.

Open

Retailers, large and small, are generally open, although some may have reduced hours. 

They include big box stores like Target, Walmart and Costco, and smaller retailers across the spectrum of Long Island business.

Supermarkets and grocery stores are generally open, but may reduce their hours. It is recommended shoppers call ahead if they have questions.

Transportation 

The Long Island Rail Road will operate on a normal weekday schedule, an MTA representative said. However, the LIRR is charging off-peak fares.

The Nassau Inter-County Express, or NICE buses, will operate on a normal weekday schedule, a representative said.
