ALBANY — Assemb. Keith Brown will not seek a fourth term in office.
Brown, R-Northport, announced his decision Friday but did not say what prompted him to step down at the end of this term. Brown, who is a partner with the law firm Brown, Altman DiLeo, LLP, said he plans to remain involved in his community while focusing on his law practice and spending more time with his family.
"This decision was a difficult one, but it is time," Brown said in a statement. "I am proud of the work we have done these past five years, and I really loved being your assemblyman."
Brown is the ranking minority member on the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. In his statement, Brown noted he was voted one of the most bipartisan members of the Assembly two years in a row.
Brown was involved in several initiatives during his three terms, including a ban on cellphones in schools, property tax relief for widows and widowers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and new policies for people with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues.
Brown previously worked as a state assistant attorney general. His father, the late Harry Brown, was a state Supreme Court justice in Suffolk County.
He was first elected to the state Assembly during a 2020 special election.
Brown is among several state representatives that have announced they will not seek reelection this fall.
State Senate Deputy Minority Leader Michael Gianaris and Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay are the two highest-profile departures. At least eight Assemblymembers and one state senator have also decided not to run.
