Long Island weather: After light snow, several days of temperatures above freezing

Long Island can expect light snow Sunday night, followed by several days of above-freezing temperatures and a chance of rain midweek that could help melt the snow still on the ground, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast calls for a 60% chance of snow starting after 8 p.m. on Sunday, and ending around 4 a.m. Monday, National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Radell said late Saturday afternoon.

“We’re looking at this point probably about an inch to maybe up to two across the island,” Radell said. “It’s not going to be heavy snow. It’s a pretty light snow event, at this point.”

Dry conditions are forecast for Saturday night and most of Sunday, with high temperatures around 40 degrees, Radell said.

Skies are expected to be clear on Monday after the overnight snow, with highs around 40 degrees, he said.

Recent days of temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s have already helped melt the snow from recent storms, Radell said, and the upcoming pattern should continue that melting trend.

Tuesday is expected to stay dry, but rain chances begin to increase Wednesday afternoon and evening, with 40% to 50% odds of rain afternoon into the night, Radell said.

“It’s a pretty quick-moving system, so it’s not a big rain event at this point,” he said.

Conditions are expected to stay mostly dry for the rest of the week, although with a slight chance of showers Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Radell said. Temperatures are forecast around the low-40s during the day and low-30s at night.
