High school seniors applying to college can worry about one less thing, as nearly 130 colleges and universities across New York will waive their application fees starting this month.

Between October and November, every SUNY and CUNY campus, in addition to many private institutions, will waive application fees as a part of the College Application Initiative, according to the Higher Education Services Corporation.

The annual initiative partners with more than 600 high schools across the state to encourage students to apply to at least one college.

"Applying to college is a big step. The cost of application fees shouldn't stand in your way," the HESC website said.

Application fees will be waived at CUNY institutions for all New York State public and private high schools between Oct. 15 and Nov. 16.

At SUNY institutions, the application waiver period is from Oct. 19 to Nov. 2.

Each student may have their application fees waived for five SUNY schools, the HESC website said.

HESC said last year, New York families saved more than $15 million in application fees through this initiative.
