Bernie Williams joining 'Buena Vista Social Club'

Call it a double play for Broadway's "Buena Vista Social Club."

Producers announced on Friday that guitarist and former New York Yankee Bernie Williams will join the cast of the Tony Award-winning musical for a six-week run from Oct. 22 through Nov. 29.

"I am excited about the opportunity to join "Buena Vista Social Club" because the music was part of my childhood growing up," Williams said in a statement. "I remember my mother listening to this music on Sunday afternoons and it reminds me of wonderful times with my family when I was a kid. The opportunity to play that same music on Broadway in this show is truly a dream come true."

Williams, 58, was a star with the Yankees from 1991 to 2006. He began playing the guitar when he was a child and released his first album, "The Journey Within," in 2003. He has since performed with the New York Philharmonic and on Long Island, including the Madison Theatre at Molloy University in Rockville Centre. He's also performed free concerts in Glen Cove and at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa.

Producers of "Buena Vista Social Club" also announced that the six-week run of former New York Met-turned-singer José Iglesias, who joined the show on Aug. 27, will now be extended through Nov. 15. The Havana-born Iglesias, who goes by the stage name "Candelita" (Spanish for little candle), plays the Narrator in "Buena Vista Social Club," which tells the true story of a group of forgotten musicians from the 1950s whose lives were upended by the Cuban revolution in 1959. The action shifts to 1996, when they are reunited.
