The Broadway hit "Oh, Mary!" is about to welcome a new first lady.
"Hacks" star Meg Stalter will take on the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in the irreverent comedy for a 10-week run beginning July 6. "Oh, Mary!" will mark the Broadway debut for Stalter, who will follow in the boot steps of Maya Rudolph when she leaves the show on July 5.
"Oh, Mary!" is fanciful and farcical take on life in the White House just days before the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, which presents a highly fictionalized, temperamental and alcoholic version of the former first lady. Others who have played Mrs. Lincoln include Cole Escola, who wrote the play and won a best actor Tony; Tituss Burgess; Betty Gilpin; Jane Krakowski; John Cameron Mitchell; Jinkx Monsoon and Hannah Solow.
"I've never seen myself in a character the way I see myself in Mary, which is strange because I don't even drink, but that's what Cole's beautiful work does to you — makes you feel incredibly excited and seen at the same time, like a little kid meeting a new friend," Stalter said in a statement.
The 35-year-old actor, who plays the ditzy Kayla on "Hacks," has become the HBO Max comedy series' breakout star. Last year Stalter also headlined the Lena Dunham and Luis Felber Netflix miniseries "Too Much" as a workaholic who moves from New York to London hoping to find love.
