Report: Hayden Paniettere may have died from fentanyl-laced oxycodone

Hayden Panettiere, the "Heroes" star who died Aug. 16, took a single fentanyl-laced oxycodone on the day of her death, according to a TMZ report.

The website said that Panettiere, who was 36, had a "long time drug dealer" in Los Angeles who had provided the pill.

Earlier Monday, ABC News reported toxicology reports were "still pending," although it confirmed that investigators, including those from the Drug Enforcement Administration, were now "focusing on what drugs may have played a role in her death, and where the drugs came from."

Panettiere — who starred in "Heroes" and "Nashville" — died last month at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, where she was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. No cause of death had been determined while an autopsy found no signs of trauma. Police said there were no signs of foul play.

Panettiere had written about her struggles with addiction — notably in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," published in May — and had spoken about them publicly too. In a 2022 People magazine interview, she said, "I was on top of the world and I ruined it. I'd think I hit rock bottom, but then there's that trap door that opens." In the interview she said that as a child actor, she walked red carpets and was given drugs "to make me peppy during interviews ... I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction," which, she said, included both opioids and alcohol.

She told the magazine, "My saving grace is that I couldn't be messy while on set and working but things kept getting out of control" in her personal life. "And as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn't live without."
