Athenian Greek Taverna in Commack has abruptly closed after more than 30 years in business.

The closing announcement thanking patrons for their support was posted to the eatery’s Instagram Friday morning. Mother's Day reservations and details of a May 27 patio party were still being pushed to visitors on its website and social media accounts. Lunch specials were posted the day before.

"After 30+ wonderful years in business, we have made the decision to close this chapter as we move on to new future endeavors," the Instagram post states. "We are deeply grateful for your loyalty, trust, and support throughout the years. It has truly been an honor to serve you."

The restaurant, owned by siblings John and Alex Homenides, prepared dishes "Yaiyia’s way, using fresh, authentic ingredients delivered daily," according to the  website.

A call to the business phone number plays a message saying the restaurant is closed. The owners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The business opened on Jericho Turnpike and moved across the street into a larger space that offered 30 seats, including a bar and limited outdoor seating, in 2019.

Athenian served lunch and dinner. The eatery offered appetizers such as PEI mussels in Athenian sauce and "pork lollipop," and dishes like grilled octopus, gyro and falafel platters. Pastries included baklava and galaktoboureko.

Athenian Greek Taverna was featured on Fios1's "Restaurant Hunter," hosted by Rob Petrone in 2012.
