Nestled in a Boston basement circa 1975, Emack & Bolio’s began as a late-night respite for local musicians and touring rock stars looking for after-gig munchies. It has since become a sensation all its own, with locations scattered around New York City and reaching as far as China. The first on Long Island debuted in Rockville Centre last week with the same city feel and rock theme.
Complete with a colorful mural featuring Emack & Bolio’s signature logo — a winged angel proffering an ice cream cone — the brand has become synonymous with wacky flavor collaborations and cones trimmed in sugary treats, from Froot Loops to sprinkles to shaved coconut. Some of the resulting flavor profiles have included Bananas Foster, S’moreo and Stoney’s Dream, which has vanilla ice cream with brownies, chocolate chip cookies and fudge swirl.
Also on the flavor list: Grasshopper Pie made from crème de menthe, Oreos and chocolate chips, and Beantown Buzz, an espresso-based ice cream with cookie crunch and chocolate-covered espresso beans. In addition to ice cream, the shop offers sugar-free, yogurt and small-batch vegan options — made from coconut cream — and sorbet. The cows from which they source are hormone-free, and the recipes use clean ingredients such as pure cane sugar and coconut oil. Vegan options include Goa mango and raspberry chocolate-covered Krispy rice and toasted coconut.
Scoops start at $6.30, in cone or cup. Vegan scoops start at $7.45. You can also take home pints and quarts, build your own sundae and create a smoothie with any of their frozen treats.
Emack & Bolio’s, 263 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre, emackandbolios.com; Open Thursday through Sunday. Thursday and Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 3 to 10 p.m.
