Supermodel Café by Bethenny Frankel served stop-work order by Town of Southampton

Supermodel Café by Bethenny Frankel was issued a stop-work order by the Town of Southampton hours after its launch Thursday, with additional summons notices expected Friday, town officials said.

"We got a stop-work order at the cafe, but we don't have to stop work. Evidently, it's about construction, but we're not doing construction," Frankel said in a video posted to Instagram Friday afternoon. "So, like I said, we are the Billy Joel of bagels. We play until we can't play anymore, but they're letting us play."

The stop-work order posted on the window at 481 Montauk Hwy. in East Quogue had three boxes checked off, stating that the operator has failed to comply with the provisions of New York State Building Code, failed to comply with the provisions of Southampton Town Zoning Ordinance chapter 330, and that a dangerous and unsafe condition exists. The notice did not specify what the dangerous conditions were or whether the business is to cease operations. The business remained open Friday.

The notice was signed by Southampton Town's Department of Land Management and the Building and Zoning Division’s senior building inspector, Michael Chih. Chih did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. 

Southampton Town public safety and emergency management administrator Ryan Murphy couldn't comment on the stop-work order because it's from the Building Department, but he said his team is planning to deliver additional notices to the business Friday. 

When reached for comment Thursday night, a representative for Frankel confirmed the cafe received a town notice "following concerns surrounding the unusually high volume of launch-day attendees." 

 Murphy said Friday, "We are delivering court summonses for sidewalk obstructions, not related to the people on the sidewalk. There’s the oversized chairs and tables and stuff like that on the sidewalk and an unpermitted sign." 

Frankel's rep continued: "The team is working cooperatively with local officials and taking the appropriate steps to address those concerns. The notice does not require the cafe to close, and there is no anticipated disruption to business. The cafe will operate during its regular daily hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m." 

Murphy said notices were already given before the cafe's opening, and "they failed to take corrective action."

Hundreds of fans lined up early Thursday morning outside the eatery building excitement for the opening, some traveling all the way from Nassau County.

Frankel said it took one month from concept to execution of the cafe, named after a play on one of her popular Instagram video series in which she taste tests "supermodel snacks," or simple-to-make, low-calorie dishes. There are six signature lattes served, including pistachio coconut cream, honey cinnamon vanilla, banana cream and strawberry matcha. The menu includes bagels in such flavors as plain, sea salt, everything and cherry vanilla. Spreads and dips include cacio e pepe, spicy sriracha and sweet cream.
