An 8-year-old boy climbed into his grandmother's parked Honda Fit on Monday in Lindenhurst and pressed the start button, sending the car down the driveway before it struck and injured the woman as she tried to stop it, the Suffolk County Police Department said.
The 63-year-old woman was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip in serious condition, police said. Her grandson was unharmed.
About 10 a.m., the boy got into the 2016 Honda as it was parked in a driveway on Wellwood Avenue, the police said in a news release.
After the boy's grandmother noticed the car was moving, she tried to open the door and bring it to a stop, according to the release. The driver’s door struck the woman, who fell to the ground and hit her head on the pavement. The car came to a stop in the middle of the road after it struck a curb.
Detectives with the department’s First Squad in West Babylon are investigating the crash, according to the release.
