A caregiver stole nearly $10,000 worth of jewelry from an East Setauket family she was aiding, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Jackquilin Smith, 40, of Medford, worked as an at-home health aide looking after an 80-year-old woman and her daughter, a 58-year-old who police described as having a "degenerative neurological disorder."
Smith stole jewelry worth roughly $9,850 from the women's home between April and May, according to police, who were alerted by the victims' family when they noticed items were missing from the house.
Suffolk police arrested Smith at her Medford home on Friday afternoon. She's charged with grand larceny and was kept in jail overnight.
Smith is due to appear in Central Islip's First District Court on Saturday.
The Hicksville-based company that employed Smith, called Homewatch CareGivers, was not immediately available for comment Saturday morning. It's unclear if Smith is still an employee.
Suffolk police are seeking additional information for anyone who might have also been a victim. The department is urging anyone with information to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
