The skeletal remains discovered late Thursday afternoon in a Manhasset park likely belong to an elderly woman who went missing in the area in December, Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

On Thursday shortly before 6 p.m., members of the Manhasset track team, out for a practice run in Plandome Pond Park, found what they believed was the remains of a human body, Ryder said at a news conference in Garden City on Friday.

Nassau Homicide Squad detectives responded to the scene and confirmed the discovery, he said.

While the body has not been positively identified, Ryder said "a lot of positive identifiers" lead detectives to believe the remains may be that of an elderly woman with cognitive issues who went missing in the area in December.

"That search was extensive over a three- to four-day period," Ryder said. "Helicopters, Marine Bureau dogs, and grid searches were done. Where she was last seen was about four miles from where the body was actually found."

The case is not believed to be criminal, he said.
