A Greenport man was killed Monday evening after his motorcycle was struck by a hit-and-run driver traveling in the opposite direction of traffic, Southold Town police said.

Around 6:04 p.m., a 2009 Honda Civic was traveling west on Route 25 in Southold, near Port of Egypt Marina, when it crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and struck the eastbound motorcycle, police said.

The driver of the Honda, Jose Perez-Perez, 58, of Greenport, continued driving, police said.

Responding officers found the motorcyclist, Rufino Tojil-Ambrocio, 42, of Greenport, unresponsive.

Tojil-Ambrocio was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

While at the scene, an officer observed the heavily damaged Honda leaving the area.

The officer drove to the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, determining it was involved in the collision.

Perez-Perez was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death without reporting.

He submitted to standardized field sobriety testing, and no signs of impairment were observed, police said.

Court information was not immediately available.
