A Roosevelt man driving drunk in 2023 on the Long Island Expressway when he crashed, killing a female passenger and seriously injuring three others, has been sentenced to 7 to 21 years in prison for the crime.

Reginald Nash, 26, had pleaded guilty in May in Queens County Court to aggravated vehicular homicide and second-degree assault, stemming from the early morning crash on the LIE in November 2023.

Supreme Court Justice Michael Hartofilis sentenced Nash on Wednesday in Queens County Court.

Nash was driving east near Exit 16 in Long Island City when he hit a highway barrier, spun out of control and caused a three-vehicle crash.

“The defendant put this terrible course of events in motion when he took the wheel under the influence of alcohol," said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz in a statement Wednesday. "It is imperative to remind every individual they are responsible for their decisions, and this defendant’s reckless conduct led to the loss of one life and life-altering injuries for the surviving passengers."

One of Nash's passengers, Cameron Mency, was killed after she was ejected 90 feet from the vehicle, according to the Queens prosecutor's office. Three other passengers were severely injured, including one woman who has still not regained full mobility after fracturing a tibia, prosecutors said.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not seriously injured, according to Newsday's prior reporting.

Nash had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12%, — exceeding the legal threshold of 0.08% — and his Honda's black box showed he was traveling 89 mph seconds before the collision, according to prosecutors.

Mency, who was 23, grew up in Hempstead, worked in Plainview and Lindenhurst and was a passionate singer, according to an online obituary.

Her family has an ongoing civil case against Nash, the other drivers and a bar in the Flatiron District that allegedly served Nash drinks before the crash.

More coverage: Every 7 minutes on average a traffic crash causing death, injury or significant property damage happens on Long Island. A Newsday investigation found that traffic crashes killed more than 2,100 people between 2014 and 2023 and seriously injured more than 16,000 people.
