At least three Long Island school districts have announced early dismissals or other modifications to their schedules due to the heat advisory in effect for the region.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Nassau County and western Suffolk through 8 p.m. Friday. Heat index values up to 100 are expected, the weather service said.
The Central Islip school district announced classes would let out early on Thursday and Friday, saying the decision was made in accordance with state regulations and school board policy.
The Amityville school district also said schools would close early on Friday because of the heat.
"As we navigate this predicted high heat index together, please stay hydrated, seek shade or AC whenever possible, and keep cool!" the district posted on their website.
The high school will dismiss students at 10 a.m. and the rest of the schools will follow in a staggered order. The last school to be dismissed will be Northeast elementary school at 12:40 p.m., according to the website.
In Uniondale, a district representative said that schools would have "modified recess" and all outdoor sports would be canceled Thursday.
Seniors, the very young and those with chronic health problems — notably heart, respiratory and mental health issues — are at increased risk during periods of extreme heat and are advised to remain in an air-conditioned setting and to avoid outdoor exposure.
The weather service advised those without air conditioning to seek an alternate location.
For those required to be outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, as well as drinking plenty of fluids to maintain hydration. Any signs of heatstroke warrant a call to 911.
