Cheryl Feld wasn’t thrilled when a house was built on the wooded lot across from her Southold home.

Scott McKay, 72, a retired builder of modular houses, bought the land and soon moved in.

Feld, 66, who was dating someone else at the time, said she paid no mind to the man who took away her scenic view. But McKay could not take his eyes off of her.

“She’s got a little dog, and I had been watching her go back and forth for months, and I thought, ‘Boy, she is so pretty, but she’s never going to want anything to do with me,’ so I just kept watching,” McKay said.

Initially Feld, a retired retailer, had written McKay off due to their different political views. But after her previous relationship ended, she decided to give him a chance.

“I put a note in his mailbox, and what happened — he didn’t call me,” Feld said. “Then two days later he calls me and goes, ‘Oh my God, I just went to my mailbox.’ ”

The couple now live in the house McKay built and where he proposed in 2025.

“I fell head over heels in love and so one night on the back deck, I just dropped down on one knee and asked her to marry me and she said yes,” McKay said. “I didn’t have a ring at the time. I could have put a Band-Aid on her finger, but that wasn’t what it was about. It was about letting her know.”

They married June 19, at Sparkling Pointe Vineyard and Winery in Southold. McKay’s son walked Feld down the aisle and the couple exchanged vows on a patio overlooking the vineyard in front of about 40 guests.

“I was so happy, and I was particularly happy because I saw everybody happy,” Feld said. “Scott was happy and everybody was smiling, laughing and people were dancing.”

Both had been married before.

“Cheryl asked, ‘I wonder why my previous marriages haven’t worked.’ ” McKay said. “I simply said, ‘You’ve just never been loved right.’ ”
