A 17-year-old boy was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool in Mattituck, police said. Police and Mattituck Fire Department personnel arrived about 12:53 p.m. at a Bennetts Pond Lane residence, where the teen had already been removed from the water, the Southold Town Police Department said in a news release.

Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased. He was not otherwise identified, and police did not say if the boy lived at the home where he was found.

The Southold Town Police Department's Detective Division is investigating the drowning with the help of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, the release said. Detectives do not suspect criminality.

In the release, the police department said it "extends its condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragic incident."

The drowning death is at least the 15th in Suffolk County this year, according to an Aug. 13 announcement posted to the Suffolk County Police Department’s social media pages, which noted that 14 people had drowned in the county through mid-August. Sixteen drowned in all of 2025.
