Fire breaks out in Farmingdale apartment building

A three-alarm fire broke out in a Farmingdale apartment building along the Long Island Rail Road tracks Sunday night, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Farmingdale Fire Department responded to the four-story building on South Front St. near Secatogue Avenue around 9 p.m., authorities said.

A fire alarm system and the sprinkler system installed in the building around 2015 kicked in, keeping the fire in the basement from spreading until firefighters were able to put it out completely, according to Nassau fire officials.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about half an hour and no one was hurt, Capt. Nicholas Corrado, the deputy county fire coordinator, said in a statement.

Corrado said no one was displaced by the fire and none of the apartments were damaged.

About 200 firefighters responded, including units from Bethpage, South Farmingdale, East Farmingdale, North Massapequa, Melville, Planview, North Amityville, Massapequa, Jericho, Syosset and Westbury.

Investigators from Nassau County’s Arson/Bomb Squad and the fire marshal’s office will determine how the fire started, according to Carrado.

The alarm and sprinkler system are also being inspected and restored, he said in a statement.

There were no reports of rail service interruptions because of the fire.

In December 2019, Newsday reported that Fairfield Properties had acquired the 154-unit, luxury apartment complex with nearly 20,000 square feet of retail space from a joint venture of H.I.G. Realty Partners of Manhattan and Irving, Texas-based JPI.
