A 46-year-old Valley Stream man faces assault and reckless endangerment charges after he allegedly sprayed a "chemical substance" at his neighbors during a Fourth of July barbecue on Friday, police said.

Nassau Police responded to the dispute on Cochran Place shortly after 8 p.m., the department said in a Saturday news release.

Nicholas Stolz was arrested and charged with seven counts of third-degree assault and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child after reportedly spraying the chemical "at a neighboring home during a 4th of July BBQ," according to police.

The victims were taken to hospitals for treatment and are in stable condition, police said.

Court records obtained by Newsday indicate there were seven victims, ranging from 1 to 46 years old. Five of them were between 1 and 15 years old, according to a charging document.

They were gathered at a Cochran Place residence for a family July Fourth party when Stolz allegedly sprayed an "unknown substance, which he claims is vinegar based" over a fence from his Avondale Street home, the document says.

That substance caused eye pain, burning and difficulty breathing among the victims, according to the report.

A police spokesperson said additional information, including what substance was used, was not available and an investigation is ongoing. Police and court documents did not identify the victims.

Stolz pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Saturday morning at First District Court in Hempstead. Judge Lisa M. Petrocelli issued a stay-away order of protection and Stolz was released on his own recognizance, according to Nicole Turso, a spokeswoman for the Nassau County District Attorney's Office.

No defense attorney was listed in the court system, but officials said Stolz was represented by Legal Aid.

He is due back in court on July 22.
