An Atlantic Beach home burned down early Saturday morning, prompting a response from more than 150 firefighters and sending one first responder to the hospital with burn injuries, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
The fire happened about 4 a.m. at a two-story house on Bay Boulevard.
The home's three residents evacuated when smoke detectors sounded, according to Long Beach Fire Department Chief John Marino. County fire officials said flames were showing through the roof when Marino's department arrived at the home. None of the residents was injured.
A firefighter was taken to a hospital with burn injuries, according to a news release from the fire marshal’s office, which said there were no other injuries.
Marino said the firefighter suffered "first and second degree burns," but was released from the hospital shortly before 10 a.m. He said the injuries were minor.
Firefighters got the flames under control about 7 a.m. and the fire was extinguished by 9:30 a.m., according to Marino, who described the blaze as "stubborn."
The fire marshal’s office wrote that parts of the home’s roof had collapsed in the three-alarm fire. Marino told Newsday the home would have to be razed and rebuilt.
The fire marshal’s office said the Red Cross was at the scene to help the displaced residents.
The fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire. Marino said the fire was not suspicious and preliminary findings suggested the cause may be cooking related.
