Hicksville schools lockout lifted, police determine there was no danger after public library report of bomb threat

Nassau County police determined there was no danger after investigating a bomb threat targeting the Hicksville Public Library that led to a lockout at Hicksville schools Friday. The library is next door to Hicksville Middle School.

Officials had earlier confirmed Hicksville High School, Hicksville Middle School and Lee Avenue Elementary were placed on lockout "as a precaution" due to the "unfolding situation" at the library.

Nassau County police were investigating a "disturbance call" at Hicksville Public Library on Friday after the library posted it was closed to the public after receiving what it described on its website as a bomb threat.

Police confirmed receiving a 911 call reporting an incident at the library at 9:52 a.m., but declined to characterize it as a report of a threat, citing the ongoing investigation.

 Arson/bomb squad specialists responded and determined there was no threat. Police identified one person who they said had made a threat. That person, who was not identified, was taken into custody. 

In an alert posted on the official school district website, Theodore Fulton, the superintendent of Hicksville schools, wrote: "We have been made aware of a situation at the Hicksville Public Library involving an individual who has reportedly made threats. The threats are not directed at our schools, and there is no known threat to our students or staff. Everyone inside our school buildings is safe, and the lockout has been implemented out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with our established safety protocols."

The district had earlier said that while "normal activities" continue during a lockout, access to the building — and each surrounding campus — was restricted.
