Newsday won seven New York Emmy Awards Saturday for its multimedia storytelling, including for a September 2025 video feature honoring both the lives lost on 9/11 and those who risked their lives to save others.
Newsday was also recognized at the 69th annual event for two features in military categories. "Bedrooms of the Fallen" won in the Military – News category for a look inside the bedrooms of three fallen soldiers, preserved and memorialized by their families.
Newsday also won in the Military – Short or Long Form Content category for "The 106th Rescue Wing," NewsdayTV's account of a routine drill weekend by members of the New York Air National Guard that morphed into a major firefighting operation, as they battled a 400-acre wildfire in Westhampton.
A Newsday video about Montauk's Camp Hero, which parsed what's fact and what's fiction about a once-top secret military base and its ties to the Netflix sci-fi series "Stranger Things," won the Nostalgia – Long Form Video award.
Newsday was also recognized in the Arts/Entertainment News category for " 'Jaws' at 50: Long Island's shark legacy," a video on the Montauk shark hunter said to be the inspiration for Captain Quint, played by Robert Shaw, in the 1975 blockbuster.
It also won in the Human Interest – News category, for a video featuring several stories about 9/11, among them one documenting the "Faces of Ground Zero" photo exhibit, a woman who became FDNY's first female legacy after losing her father to the tragedy, and reflections from a south tower survivor.
Newsday also won in the Interview and Interview and Discussion – Short Form category for “The Backstory with Ken Buffa: Who is Rex Heuermann,” an in-depth discussion about the Massapequa Park architect who would eventually be identified as the man who murdered the women whose remains were found in the Gilgo Beach area.
A team from Newsday’s promotion department — Royston Wilson, Gregory Heim, Frank Czuchan and Miguel Cubillos — won in the News Promotion Image (Single Spot) category for promoting the Newsday app.
“We are incredibly proud of Newsday’s New York Emmy wins and nominations this year. This recognition affirms the quality of Newsday’s journalism and our dedication to delivering impactful news and telling compelling stories,” said Newsday’s publisher, Debby Krenek. “Our wide-ranging nominations highlight our commitment to journalistic excellence, innovation and multimedia storytelling across our organization as we cover Long Island like no one else can.”
The New York Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences annually recognizes exceptional work in television and digital media produced in the region with its iconic golden trophy featuring a winged woman holding an atom.
