BACKGROUND

  • Thorne, 58, of Patchogue, a registered Republican, is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines as he seeks a third term.
  • He was a longtime EMT-critical care technician in the North Patchogue Fire Department.
  • He previously worked for the Suffolk County Board of Elections as a training coordinator.

ISSUES

  • Thorne has focused as a legislator on helping first responders and recently sponsored legislation to rein in predatory board-up businesses in the "fire chasing" industry.
  • Supporting affordable housing initiatives has been another priority for Thorne and he helped pass a bill to create a new housing incentive to help recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel.
  • Public safety has also been a key issue and he sponsored legislation that added a certification requirement to the sale of lithium-ion storage batteries.
