BACKGROUND
- Wehrheim, 76, a registered Republican, is running for reelection on the Republican and Conservative lines. He was elected as town supervisor in 2018 and is seeking his third four-year term.
- Wehrheim has served in Smithtown government since 1972, primarily with the town's Department of Parks, Buildings and Grounds. He was appointed department director in 1989 and served until his retirement in 2003.
- Wehrheim served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy.
ISSUES
- Wehrheim said that on the issue of development, he believes that boosting the housing supply in areas such as Kings Park is critical to revitalizing downtown areas in town.
- He said during his time in office, his administration has invested in parks across Smithtown and improved the town's financial condition.
- He said he wants to prioritize finishing his plan for restoring town parks, upgrading the town's senior center, and putting cameras under town drainage systems beneath town roadways to help the town prepare for flood planning.
