Carelus, 56, of West Hempstead, is a registered Republican and is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines in the general election.
He works as an analyst for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, an organization that works with state insurance regulators. Previously he worked as a financial consultant and as a credit analyst for Standard & Poor’s.
Carelus received his undergraduate degree in politics and economics from SUNY Old Westbury and a master’s degree in economics from Brooklyn College.

Carelus said he wants the town to promote HempsteadWorks, a program the town operates, to help families and youth enter training and apprentice programs and obtain financial assistance for college.
He said he wants the town to work with employers to partner with HempsteadWorks to provide jobs for people who use their training programs.
To alleviate overcrowded housing, he wants to increase transit-oriented housing development within his district by speeding up the building permitting process for multifamily housing while still maintaining suburban lifestyles.
