BACKGROUND
- Carelus, 56, of West Hempstead, is a registered Republican and is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines in the general election.
- He works as an analyst for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, an organization that works with state insurance regulators. Previously he worked as a financial consultant and as a credit analyst for Standard & Poor’s.
- Carelus received his undergraduate degree in politics and economics from SUNY Old Westbury and a master’s degree in economics from Brooklyn College.
ISSUES
- Carelus said he wants the town to promote HempsteadWorks, a program the town operates, to help families and youth enter training and apprentice programs and obtain financial assistance for college.
- He said he wants the town to work with employers to partner with HempsteadWorks to provide jobs for people who use their training programs.
- To alleviate overcrowded housing, he wants to increase transit-oriented housing development within his district by speeding up the building permitting process for multifamily housing while still maintaining suburban lifestyles.
