BACKGROUND

  • LaValle, 48, of Port Jefferson, a registered Republican, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. He is seeking his first full term as town clerk. He won a special election in 2023 following the retirement of Donna Lent.
  • LaValle previously served nine years as a Brookhaven Town councilman. He worked for Lynx Mortgage Bank in Westbury for about 20 years.
  • He received a bachelor's degree from Salisbury University in Maryland.

ISSUES

  • Technology upgrades. Working with Brookhaven Town's information technology staff, "we’ve been able to update our processes," such as moving land use applications and boat slip renewals online so that business people and residents don't have to fill out paper applications, LaValle said. He said 10,000 annual disability parking pass renewals also are done online.
  • Transparency. LaValle said he speaks regularly at local libraries and civic groups to describe the town clerk’s functions. Once a month, he holds office hours at public libraries. The clerk's office also uses social media accounts and a digital monthly newsletter to promote events such as town board and zoning board meetings, he said.
  • QR codes. Signs posted on properties that are the subject of upcoming land use hearings, such as for zoning changes, now feature QR codes that can be scanned by residents to find additional information describing the project, LaValle said.
