BACKGROUND

  • Hanley, 48, of Shelter Island Heights, a registered Democrat, is making her first run for elected office. She is running on the Democratic line.
  • She is chair of the Community Housing Fund Advisory Board, which is developing plans for 10 workforce housing units and created additional year-round housing with accessory dwelling units.
  • Hanley is a small-business accountant who does specialty tax preparation work and is an enrolled tax agent with the IRS. She said she graduated from Trinity Washington University, where she studied art history.

ISSUES

  • Hanley said she would look at how affordability affects the year-round community. "How can we look at zoning and codes to encourage small businesses, expand the tax base and help make the island economically stable," she said.
  • She also would represent working parents’ viewpoint to the board, Hanley said, and bring her experience in building consensus among a bipartisan coalition on the housing committee that kept plans moving forward.
  • She would encourage the board to look at the larger picture and plan for housing needs while considering development pressures, Hanley said. That way the board can present options to residents, get community input and find the overlap where they can move forward.
