BACKGROUND

  • Reiter, 64, of Shelter Island Heights, a registered Democrat, is making his first bid for elected office. He is running on the Democratic line. He has been a heavy equipment operator at the town recycling center for 20 years. 
  • He has been a member of the Shelter Island Fire Department for over 20 years, is a member of the fire police and served as a commissioner. 
  • Reiter said he is running for his grandchildren, looking into the future to safeguard isIand life and hoping his grandchildren will stay on Shelter Island.

ISSUES

  • Reiter said he would focus on safety issues such as improving town landings to make them more accessible to fire trucks, along with providing better public access. He also would add more catch basins to capture runoff.
  • He said he would focus on road repairs and maintenance.
  • Reiter also would work to increase road safety, from coordinating white lines designating lanes for bikes and walkers to repairing dips in road aprons. He would also try to create a two-foot lane on the side of the road and attempt to widen Rt. 114 in spots for a safer ferry-to-ferry route.
