BACKGROUND
- Schaffer, 61, of Babylon, is a registered Democrat and is running on the Democratic and Conservative party lines in the general election. He is seeking reelection.
- He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Albany, a law degree from Brooklyn law school and has been chairman of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee since 2000.
- Schaffer was a Suffolk County legislator from 1987 until 1992, served as town supervisor from 1992 to 2001 and was elected to the supervisor position again in 2012.
ISSUES
- For this past term, Schaffer cited the creation of full-time park ranger positions and the strengthening of the town’s public safety department as significant accomplishments.
- He said he would like to focus on the hamlet of Deer Park and creating more of a downtown there, including possible code changes to allow for redevelopment and the creation of a façade improvement program.
- He said he would like to continue work on the Copiague and Wyandanch economic development projects and the town’s CLEAN program to address littering.
