BACKGROUND

  • Gonzalez, 64, of Brentwood, is a registered Democrat running on the Democratic and Working Families party lines as he seeks a fourth term.
  • A longtime union leader, Gonzalez was first elected in a special election in 2019. Prior to that he served as president of IBEW Local 1430 from 2012-2019.
  • He began his career as a shop steward with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

ISSUES

  • Gonzalez said one of his top priorities is to bring a longstanding sewer project in Brentwood to completion. The sewer connection will strengthen local businesses, he said, and added it will have environmental benefits as well as economic. 
  • He said strengthening the community's relationship with law enforcement has been a priority. He said he wants to ensure members of the largely minority hamlets he represents are not afraid to call police when needed.
  • He said continuing to support seniors is another key issue and pointed to his office's partnership with Island Harvest Food Bank to distribute meals to low-income seniors.
