A Holtsville movie theater was closed for a third day Friday after Town of Brookhaven authorities determined its fire detection system was defective, deeming the theater unsafe for occupancy, officials said.

A notice was posted on the entrance doors of the Island 16 Cinema de Lux Cinema,  at 185 Morris Ave., saying the department of public safety determined at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday the building was unsafe. Friday, the theater's website said it was closed due to "electrical maintenance."

The theater cannot open until the fire detection system is repaired, Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman told Newsday.

Inspectors also found that some of the theater exits were blocked by snow, making emergency egress difficult, town spokesperson Drew Scott said in an email.

By 8 a.m. Thursday, the theater’s mostly empty parking lots, entrances, sidewalks and outdoor seating area were substantially clear of snow and ice.

Purple salts could be seen on the front entrance walkway and sidewalks, along with an unoccupied Bobcat plow.

A person answering the phone at the theater who identified himself as a manager declined to comment.
