Fatal train strike leads to temporary suspension of LIRR Montauk branch

A Long Island Rail Road train fatally struck a pedestrian Wednesday evening, temporarily suspending part of the Montauk branch, according to the MTA.
The collision occurred about 6:15 p.m. east of the Sayville LIRR station, an MTA spokesperson told Newsday via email. Suffolk police arrived minutes later and declared the individual deceased. No other injuries were reported.
MTA police determined criminality is not suspected following a preliminary investigation that included witness statements and the review of video footage, the spokesperson said.
As of 9 p.m., train service was operating with cancellations and delays.
Additional details, including the identity of the deceased, were not immediately available.
After a 99-minute delay, the train involved in the strike, which had roughly 600 passengers on board, proceeded east to Montauk, the spokesperson said.
