Southampton police body camera footage shows Steven Eastwood stabbing his mother, ignoring officers, before police fatally shot him

Southampton police officers who fatally shot a man they confronted while he was stabbing his mother on Mother’s Day inside the family's home repeatedly told him to drop his knife before they opened fire, police body camera video released by the New York Attorney General’s Office shows.

The footage released Tuesday shows three officers approaching the Topping Drive home where they found Steven Eastwood, 28, covered in blood just inside the kitchen area standing over his mother with a knife as she cried out.

"Drop the knife," officers Spaulding, Simpson and Jurgensen shout just before 3 p.m. on May 10 as the man turns and then slowly walks toward the officers without responding or heeding their commands.

Two of the officers, whose first names were not provided, can been seen retreating onto the porch and down into the front yard, aiming their service weapons at Eastwood while repeating their demand to drop his weapon. Simpson remains in the room opposite the crime scene inside the home, the video shows.

In the footage, Eastwood stands in the foyer staring at the officers and then walks out on the porch in bare feet wearing a gray hoodie and black pants with the knife still in his hand.

"Tommy, watch out, he’s coming in," one of the officers shouts as Eastwood turns slowly without speaking and returns inside the home to continue stabbing his mother.

"Tommy, I’m coming in," the officer shouts, apparently alerting Simpson that he’s reentering the home.

The videos then show Eastwood straddled over his mother, repeatedly thrusting his knife until the officers fire five shots.

He falls over to the left of his mother’s body and lays there, the video shows.

The attorney general’s Office of Special Investigation, which is mandated by law to investigate all police-involved deaths, said Eastwood died at the scene. Police found several knives at the scene, according to a news release.

The attorney general’s office has not made any finding in the case.

"Faced with an ongoing deadly assault, officers discharged their service weapons, striking Mr. Eastwood and immediately stopping the attack," Southampton Town police said in a statement the day of the shooting. The department did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment on the footage.

Southampton Police Chief James Kiernan said at a news conference the following day that the mother had called them for help, saying her son was intoxicated and acting violently. She called again later saying he was threatening her with a knife, the chief said.

Steven Eastwood was one of three brothers, triplets, who lost their father, Lewis Eastwood, to cancer on Sept. 17, 2008, at the age of 50, surrogate court records show. The boys were 16 at the time.

The family sued the doctors under a wrongful death claim, saying they failed to properly read a CT scan that showed the father had cancer. The two doctors settled the case for $2.5 million, according to court files, half of which went to the mother and the rest was split between the three boys, paid out gradually until 2033.

The mother’s health condition could not immediately be determined.

Lewis Eastwood, one of Steven's brothers, hung up on Newsday when asked about the episode.
