Fatal vehicle crash into Sunken Meadow State Park toll plaza is 2nd in a week, park officials say

For the second time in a week, a car has crashed into the toll booths at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, police said.

Park officials said the driver was killed in a crash on Monday.

State police and Suffolk fire officials confirmed the crash, which was reported in a 911 call at 1:04 p.m. Monday. The park was closed while police investigate.

Officials said the Kings Park Fire Department and state and state parks police responded to the scene.

Last Monday, police said a fiery crash killed a driver at the toll plaza to the multiuse facility, which borders Long Island Sound. The plaza, built in the 1950s, was renovated about 10 years ago.

Park officials said the crash took place at the same location on the toll plaza as the previous one.

State Parks Long Island Regional Director George Gorman said last week that the park had reopened hours after the crash following the police investigation. Photos from the scene last week showed two of the booths heavily damaged and scarred from fire, with barricades erected blocking the travel lanes there.

Police said Monday that details regarding the second incident were still emerging.
