One downtown Hempstead neighborhood had 24 pedestrian or cyclist deaths and serious injuries from 2019 to 2023 — the most on Long Island, according to a Newsday analysis of state traffic data.

Another neighborhood, or census tract, in the Copiague and North Amityville area had 16 such fatalities and injuries during those years, many along Sunrise Highway. There were 14 in a neighborhood in the North Bellport and Brookhaven area, as well as in two tracts in Hicksville and Mineola.
