Friday evening commuters going east on the Long Island Expressway were contending with residual backups following a tractor trailer fire earlier in the day that closed all eastbound lanes, Nassau County police said.
About 150 gallons of diesel fuel were recovered after the Friday morning fire, Nassau County fire officials said.
Around 10:38 a.m., the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department was alerted to the fire near Exit 35, Shelter Rock Road in North Hills, Bohdan Pilczak, assistant chief fire marshal said in a news release.
Police said they closed all eastbound lanes near Exit 34 and the South Service Road. Fire officials were seen putting out the fire alongside a large plume of smoke on 511NY video footage.
The tractor trailer was hauling cabbage.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal Hazmat team recovered about 150 gallons of fuel after two fuel tanks leaked as a result of the fire.
Police confirmed all lanes had been reopened just before 1 p.m.
No injuries were reported and the fire is not considered to be suspicious, Pilczak said.
