A Rockland County man described by a police union official as a retired NYPD detective faces a murder charge after his arrest Wednesday afternoon in connection with a fatal shooting Tuesday evening on the George Washington Bridge, the department said.
Victor Romero, 62, of Haverstraw, was in NYPD custody on a murder charge, according to the police department's press office.
About 7:18 p.m. on Tuesday, police responded to a 911 call of a man shot on the outbound upper-level roadway of the bridge.
The police identified the victim as Koran Irvine, 46, of Valley Cottage, also in Rockland County. He was found unconscious and unresponsive in the driver's seat of a motor vehicle with a gunshot wound to the rear of his right shoulder, the police said.
EMS took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His wife, Patricia Irvine, said the couple had two children. She said she was still processing her loss.
"He was taken from us," she told Newsday.
In a statement, Koran Irvine's employer, Con Edison said: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him."
A police union official told Newsday Romero is a former NYPD detective who retired in 2001. Additional information, including how long he had been on the job, or where he last worked, was not immediately available.
