Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, of Queens, was 3rd soldier killed in Iranian attack on U.S. base

A soldier from Queens has been identified as the third U.S. service member killed in an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan on Friday.

The Pentagon said Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, was killed in the attack, bringing the death toll to 18 U.S. service members since the war began.

"Today, New York mourns the loss of one of our own, Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad of Ozone Park, who is believed to have been killed in action while serving our nation on July 17," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement early Wednesday. "My heart is with her family, loved ones and the soldiers who stood beside her as they grieve this unimaginable loss."

On Monday, the Pentagon identified 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, as the two other soldiers who were killed in Friday’s attack.

The soldiers were killed by Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in the first troop deaths from direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the war.

A fourth soldier, Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed during a controlled detonation of a drone in Iraq on Sunday.

Rampersad was stationed in Ansbach, Germany.

"Sgt. Rampersad's courage and sacrifice will be remembered not just in Queens, but across all five boroughs. My deepest condolences are with her family, loved ones, and all those grieving this profound loss," New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement on X on Wednesday morning.

"For so many New Yorkers, wars overseas are never distant—they are felt here at home. The sacrifices made by service members and their families are a constant reminder of this," the statement continued. "We are forever grateful for their service and will work every day to honor it."

The U.S. Army website said Rampersad enlisted in the Army in March 2019. Her awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon, according to the website.
