Cold evenings and sunny-but-brisk days are in the Long Island forecast through late Thursday with highs in the 40s and lows after dark dipping into the mid 30s, according to the National Weather Service.

A freeze watch was set to end at 8 a.m. Wednesday, the weather service said.

Forecasters had warned that "frost and freeze conditions could kill sensitive vegetation" in Nassau, where growing season began on April 1. In Suffolk, growing season doesn’t formally begin until Saturday.

The high Wednesday is forecast to hit 47 degrees with wind chill values early making it feel closer to between 30 and 40.

Subfreezing temperatures are also possible for much of Long Island overnight Wednesday into Thursday when a low of 33 is forecast.

Daytime temperatures figure to remain in the upper 40s through Thursday before dropping to 39 in the evening. On Friday, the high will hit 56 under mostly sunny skies.

A low of 45 is in the Friday evening forecast, the weather service said. More sunny skies and even warmer temperatures are in store for Saturday across Long Island. The high will top out at close to 60 during the day, with an evening low of 41.
