Long Island weather: High heat, humidity, feels like 100 temperatures on tap through Saturday

Long Islanders better get comfortable with being uncomfortable, as the hot, sticky weather is sticking around through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Just like on Thursday, the weather service forecast heat indexes, or feels like conditions, "up to around 100" degrees for Friday and Saturday, meteorologist John Cristantello told Newsday.

Nassau and Suffolk counties will remain under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. Saturday. That advisory signals feels like temperatures in the upper 90s for two or more consecutive days or between 100 and 104 degrees for any amount of time.

High temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 80s Friday, through the weekend and into next week.

Seniors and anyone with chronic health conditions are at an increased risk for heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses, the weather service said.

People are advised to use air conditioning, as indoor spaces without it can be hotter than the outdoors, or go somewhere that is climate controlled. Anyone working outside is advised to take frequent breaks in the shade or in air conditioning.

Friday evening will bring showers and thunderstorms, Cristantello said. Those conditions will "fizzle out" overnight but could ramp up in the early afternoon Saturday.

"Perhaps they could be strong, but severe is not really expected," the meteorologist added of the stormy conditions that are more likely Friday than Saturday. "You could get a storm that could bring some pretty good gusts, but it would be below severe limits [of 58 mph] if it were to happen at all. We're not really anticipating damaging winds."

Anyone heading to the beach to cool off can monitor the weather service for rip current alerts. On Thursday, the agency placed all South Shore beaches under a moderate risk advisory, warning that life-threatening rip currents could sweep bathers away from the shore and into deeper waters.
