Clearing skies and warm temperatures arrived Sunday after heavy storms crossed Long Island, causing delays at area airports and localized flooding

The National Weather Service said there remained a chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon across most of Long Island but that the storms that earlier had caused minor flooding in some areas moved out to sea.

As it moved east, the storm caused the service to issue a special marine warning for Eastern Suffolk County from Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point, warning of severe thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts. The warning has since expired and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The storm traveled Sunday morning from New York City into Nassau County, according to Joe Pollina, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Brief periods of heavy rain disrupted flights and there were reports of some flash flooding in New Jersey, Pollina said.

About 60 flights were reported delayed at Kennedy Airport shortly after 1 p.m. and another 10 at LaGuardia, according to FlightAware's MiseryMap.

Nassau police had several reports of flooded roads, including at New Hyde Park Road in North Hills, where a vehicle stuck in water, and Port Washington Boulevard in Flower Hill was closed briefly between Crabapple Road and Bayberry Ridge due to flooding. The road has since been reopened, police said.

A manhole cover near Great Neck Road and Northern Boulevard in Great Neck had been pushed off, which police said can happen when the sewers are overwhelmed by water.

Monday will be sunny with a high of 80 and a small chance of rain in the afternoon after 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday will bring the same: clear skies and temperatures around 80 during the day and in the low to mid 60s at night.

A similar pattern of clear skies and daytime highs around 80 is forecast through Thursday for Long Island.
