Long Island weather: Cooler temperatures on tap with rain likely this weekend

Long Island’s streak of warm weather expires this weekend as high temperatures dip below 60 and rainfall creates a chance for coastal flooding on parts of the Island, according to National Weather Service meteorologist John Murray.
Temperatures will drop into the 40s overnight Saturday into Sunday and conditions become foggy with a roughly 30% chance of showers, Murray said.
The forecast calls for chillier conditions into early next week.
"It’s overall a cooling trend with the temperatures through [the weekend] ... That’s one thing that’s going to be pretty noticeable as you go through each day," Murray said. "We also have some rain in the forecast that’s going to be coming back tonight and into tomorrow."
The NWS also issued a coastal flood statement for southwest Suffolk County from 10 p.m. Saturday until early Sunday morning.
"We’re going to have more piling of water, a greater chance for some minor coastal flooding," Murray said. "A lot of the coastline of Long Island is expected to experience minor coastal flooding for the high tide cycles."
The statement advises people to not drive through flooded roadways.
Temperatures on Sunday are expected to remain in the upper 50s, but there is a 90% chance of showers that could make conditions feel cooler, Murray told Newsday.
"It looks like a wet Sunday," Murray said. The rainfall is expected to continue from Sunday morning through the afternoon. "The rain will taper off Sunday night and dry conditions return."
Monday’s high temperature will be about 52 degrees for most of Long Island. Conditions are expected to be mostly sunny, but there is a 20% chance of showers later Monday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 50s until Wednesday.
