After Saturday night and Sunday morning brought some of the season's coldest temperatures to Long Island, it may be time to put those summer clothes into hibernation.
Temperatures on Long Island dipped into the upper 30s in places overnight but recovered into the high 50s Sunday afternoon. Afternoon temperatures were expected to hover around the upper 50s and low 60s for the rest of this week, forecasters said. Overnight temperatures are expected in the mid-40s.
Here's a sampling of the overnight lows across Long Island:
- Upton: 39
- Long Island MacArthur Airport, Islip: 40
- Farmingdale: 40
- Shirley: 39
- Montauk Point: 45
- Centerport: 41
- Syosset: 39
Does the chilly turn mean it's time to put away the shorts? Maybe, according to Brian Ciemnecki a National Weather Service meteorologist.
"I'm not so sure we warm up enough to have shorts again," he said in a phone interview. "But just looking at this week, it does look like we're finally seeing the arrival of fall here on Long Island."

As for rain, most of the week should be dry except for Wednesday night, when there is a chance of showers that continue into Thursday, the weather service said.
A nor'easter developing off the coast of the Carolinas may impact Mid-Atlantic states later in the week.
"We're gonna have to keep an eye on and see ... how everything plays itself out," Ciemnecki said.
