It was a cloudy day at the Long Beach boardwalk the other week. The boardwalk was nearly empty except for a woman who appeared to be in her 20s standing along the rail. A special officer in front of her was issuing her a summons.

He was taking a long time to write it up. The woman had been caught crossing a lane on the boardwalk with her moped e-bike. She showed me the summons. It was illegible except for the part where it said she incurred a fine of $150 to $250.

She started to cry and seemed distressed. Was there a warning sign? The relevant sign at the entrance lists her offense last, at the bottom. The font is pretty small. And apparently the officer decided there was no letting her off with just a warning. Hard to believe, eh?
