Entering May, we encounter many holidays and celebrations. During these times, we often become complacent about traveling to and from our destinations. Fun is at the forefront, while safety should be.

Long Island offers much, especially its beaches and, of course, tourist draws. Sadly, Suffolk County roads are among the most dangerous in the country due to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The fatality rate is exacerbated by a lack of signage as well as failure to enforce laws that could curb fatalities and injuries due to careless driving, unlicensed motorists and intoxication.

Here's a reminder that for-hire vehicles should be held to the highest standards, as they are utilized more frequently during the summer. It's time for these companies to better adhere to the laws, and for stiffer punishments for those who disregard and violate the rules of the road.
