THE SCOOP Carle Place is a compact community with all its schools on one campus, notes Nancy Jarvis, an associate broker with Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty.

"We are close to the railroad. We have our own fire department, our own water district, our own civic association," Jarvis said. "We have good sports programs. Everyone in the community supports one another. About 70% of the people who live here, grew up here."

Groundbreaking just started on a major $4 million project — from Nassau County, American Rescue Plan and town funds — for new sidewalks, curbs and drainage and repaved roadways along Westbury Avenue, from Jamaica Boulevard to Carle Road, Town of North Hempstead Councilman Robert Troiano Jr. said.

"The Carle Place community is very tightly knit. They have made investments in their homes and in their school system, but that similar investment hasn't been made by the town until recently," said Troiano, adding that two years ago the town renovated Charles J. Fuschillo Park, adding a spray pad and making it the first accessible playground in the Town of North Hempstead.

Construction recently began on the site of the shuttered Chateau Briand on Old Country Road, which will reopen as a multi-tenant retail and dining space and drive-through bank.

A descendant of English settler Captain Thomas Carle, who first purchased land in the area in 1656, Silas Carle was a successful pharmaceuticals merchant in New York City when he returned to Long Island circa 1830 to build a glitzy house for his family on 220 acres. Before long, the house, which still stands today, had become a local landmark, referred to by residents as the Carle Place, a name that eventually was extended to the community that developed around it, replacing the name Frog Hollow, according to Newsday's "Long Island: Our Story."

For decades, Carle Place was surrounded by small farms, many run by Polish, German and Irish immigrants. In 1916, the hamlet opened its first post office, making the Carle Place name official. Seven years later, the hamlet gained its own Long Island Rail Road station.

In 1946, developer William J. Levitt built 600 low-cost houses on 19 acres in Carle Place, exploding the population fivefold in five years. Levitt's work in the hamlet would serve as the prototype for the behemoth development he would start the following year: Levittown. Soon, the dwindling potato fields gave way to housing and commercial development.

Today, home styles in the hamlet include mostly Capes, Colonials and split levels, with prices ranging from $600,000 to over $2 million.
