THE SCOOP A north side out of Currier & Ives and a south side with large homes on old working farms combine to create the quaint, charming community of Miller Place.
"It's a very, very engaged community," said Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner. "It's a very engaged constituency and they have a tremendous amount of pride."
The hamlet has a thriving business district centered around Route 25A, which is lined with shops, eateries and other businesses. The thoroughfare splits the north and south ends, and denotes the historic from the modern.
North of 25A, the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society is active in the community and is renovating the historic 1720 William Miller House.
"They do a spooky walk for Halloween," Bonner said. "They do a historical fair every year. They really lean into the historic connection to the Revolutionary War."

Miller Place Square just north of 25A on Echo Avenue houses small shops and eateries.
South of 25A is a more recent vintage of homes sitting on former working farms.
"I remember back when I was in school it was not built up at all," said Sherry Acker, a salesperson with Serhant who grew up in the hamlet. "We had peach farms out here. And those are all gone now to housing developments."
Decades after graduating from Miller Place High School, Acker still has about 15 best friends from that school.
"The community feel that you get in this small town is amazing," said Acker. "Everybody knows everybody."
Home to Willow Creek Golf & Country Club, Cordwood Landing County and Washington Memorial parks, Miller Place also has private Long Island Sound beaches, accessible to residents through homeowners' associations. In winter, people can ice skate on Miller Place Pond, which is a short walk from McNulty's Ice Cream Parlor, a community mainstay since 1992.
The hamlet was named Miller's Place for Andrew Miller, a farmer who bought land in 1679 from John Thomas, the first settler. During the Revolutionary War, its residents were mostly American patriots. One notable outlier, Richard Miller, Andrew's son, was killed in May 1776 while recruiting for the British cause.
The community's name changed to Miller Place in 1894, the year the railroad came, bringing an influx of tourists. The train station closed in 1938 for lack of business, but development continued steadily after World War II.
Today, the hamlet is home to many 18th and 19th century homes along Main Street (North Country Road) and is on the National Register of Historic Places for its more than two dozen extant historic homes.
Homebuyers will find mostly Colonial and Victorian homes, with prices ranging from $499,990 to more than $1 million for a house on the beach.
