North Shore University Hospital opened a new $25.7 million unit in Manhasset to serve patients recovering from surgery.

The 11,400-square-foot post-anesthesia care unit will be staffed by about 85 employees, said Jason Molinet, a spokesperson for Northwell Health. It can serve 42 patients, according to a news release from Northwell.

The facility opened on May 26 after 17 months of construction, Molinet said.

The new facility follows Northwell’s completion of the 288,000-square-foot Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion in 2024, which added 18 operating rooms to the Manhasset hospital, Newsday reported.

The post-anesthesia care unit sits in the former operating room space, which was replaced when the Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion opened, according to the news release.

With the new surgical pavilion, North Shore University Hospital has added five additional operating rooms, and needed more space for patients to recover because the hospital can handle more complex surgical procedures, said David Hirschwerk, the hospital’s chief medical officer.

Patients recovering from operations such as cardiac surgery, organ transplants or neurosurgery are monitored by a team in the post-anesthesia care unit for several hours, until they are discharged to other parts of the hospital or to their homes, Hirschwerk added.

The additional capacity will let North Shore University Hospital serve more local patients as well as those from out of state, or traveling internationally for surgery, Hirschwerk said.

“We really seek to be a high-level center to serve the local community,” Hirschwerk said.

Demand for medical doctors on Long Island is projected to grow through 2034 as the region’s population ages, according to a 2023 Northwell study. And Long Island has seen a shortage of home health aides who care for elderly Long Islanders living at home, Newsday reported.

Other hospital networks have planned big investments in the region; NYU Langone plans to build a new $1 billion teaching hospital and research center in Melville, Newsday reported.
