In 43 years, Fred and Janet Seufert have seen sprouts become fig trees, a son and daughter become adults and their house evolve to meet their needs.

The same Stony Brook backyard saw the Seuferts marry in 1982, their daughter marry and their son celebrate his engagement.

"We've been here for a long time," Fred said. "It's amazing how things have just blossomed."

Now in their late 60s and downsizing, the Seuferts have listed the Ballad Place property for $899,999. Taxes on the 0.62-acre parcel, which falls within the Three Village Central School district, total $18,278.

"We raised our two kids here, and we've morphed the house as the years went on," Janet said.

The home has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. There are an attached and detached garage, as well as a first-floor accessory apartment with vaulted ceilings.

"The apartment was something they've been working on for some time," said listing agent Diana Maslauskas, of Shea & Sanders Real Estate Inc.

According to Maslauskas, the Seuferts have been working with Brookhaven Town to ensure the apartment and detached garage are properly permitted and were waiting to receive physical permits.

Maslauskas described the house as an "expanded farm ranch" with a covered front porch and an open-concept first floor. The accessory unit is only accessible from the outside.

"The house has tons of windows, so it has a lot of natural light," Maslauskas said. "There's a beautiful bay window in the living room, which is open to the family room, which is open to the kitchen."

The Seuferts described a property full of happy memories, including their children riding bicycles in the cul de sac without worry of traffic.

"We had our time, and now it's time for somebody else to move into this house and really enjoy it for what it is," Fred said.
